This page is action-first. Use the collapsible sections to expand what you need. Where possible I used zero-cost options — details below.
1 — Quick checklist — publish-ready (expand)
- Final manuscript (proofread — peer swap reviews keep cost 0)
- Cover: design on Canva (free) using KDP templates
- ISBN: optional — KDP provides ASIN / free identifiers for print if acceptable
- Formatted EPUB (Calibre/Free tools) + print-ready PDF
- Book description, keywords, categories — optimise for Amazon & search engines
- Author profile & links (free on Amazon Author Central, Pothi, Goodreads)
Note: publish with **0 ₹ outlay** using free tools and print-on-demand (Pothi / KDP) — printing cost is covered by buyer in POD mode.
2 — Formatting & file preparation (expand)
Use free tools: Canva for cover + KDP templates, Calibre or Word templates for EPUB/PDF. Validate EPUB in Kindle Previewer. For print PDFs ensure margins and bleed match KDP/Pothi templates.
- 2.0–2.5 line-height recommended for print readability
- Export images at 300 DPI for print covers (Canva free supports this)
3 — Costs & distribution (India — updated)
Reality: you can self-publish with zero upfront cost by using print-on-demand and free author tools.
- Amazon KDP — free to upload. KDP's print distribution may not always deliver optimally within India for some print options.
- Pothi.com — recommended for India-focused POD and local delivery. Pothi supports print-when-ordered (no inventory cost). You only incur printing cost when a customer buys the book.
Recommendation: upload ebook to KDP for global reach and set up Pothi for Indian print deliveries (zero stock cost). Use both to maximize reach and delivery reliability.
4 — Publishing flow (exact steps I followed)
- Prepare manuscript → choose ebook & print formats
- Create cover in Canva (use KDP/Pothi dimensions)
- Set up KDP & Pothi accounts → fill metadata & keywords deliberately
- Upload files, preview proofs, publish
- Claim Amazon Author page & list Pothi product link for Indian readers
5 — Launch marketing — low-cost tactics
- Use your author website as the hub — publish SEO articles that link to product pages
- Share short BTS & reels on Instagram and LinkedIn
- Use micro-influencers and book bloggers for reviews (often trade-copy)
- Create an email signup and offer a free chapter PDF (hosts such as SlideShare/Scribd double as backlinks)
6 — Backlink & outreach plan (30-day starter)
- Week 1: Publish 2 related articles & share on LinkedIn & Medium (canonical to this page)
- Week 2: Upload a PDF guide to SlideShare & Scribd; link back to this article
- Week 3: Guest post on 1–2 book blogs and add author profile links on Goodreads/Pothi
- Week 4: Seed Quora/Reddit answers linking to specific sections (value-first answers)
7 — Results to track (expand)
- Search Console impressions & top queries (weekly snapshots)
- Clicks & CTR per page
- Backlinks created and index status
- Referral traffic to KDP & Pothi listings
